Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. It's a chance each week for you the reader to discover current WIP or previously published book by possibly new to you authors.

Today, I am showcasing a snippet from my sweet medieval romance – A Voice in the Air.

Scene Set – More of Ewen in the cave.

Excerpt -

With a quick shudder of his body, he snapped himself awake. Angry that he had drifted off, he checked his mound of rocks. They seemed undisturbed. His dry lips and parched throat reminded him to go in search of the water.

With a strong sense of caution, he moved along the edge of the cave, keeping the wall as a reference so he could return to his meal. The temperature of the air cooled. He smelled the water. Slowing his pace even more, he’d stretch out his hand and tapped about, then dragged his knees up to it. The fire in his knees from pressing against the rocks made the process torturous. But Ewen consoled himself, it also told him he was still alive. Repeating the worm-like motion, he reached the edge of the rock. He stretched out his arm, cupped his hand and brought the cold wetness to his lips. When his thirst was quenched, he cautiously turned and crawled back to his place.

He settled into his spot and checked the mound. The rocks were scattered about. Swishing both hands left and right, he searched for the last of his food. Stretching his body out, he extended the range of his search.

The rats were cunning. They bided their time until he left for water. Lesson learned.

Despair welled up. Tears slipped down his cheeks. His food gone. He was trapped. And alone. With no hope of rescue. He’d watched in horror as knight after knight, then villager after villager had been slain. His liege killed by a spiked club swung against his head. Fear took over and Ewen ran. He knew he couldn’t outrun a troll, but maybe he could hide, like a rabbit, in the forest. Cornered between a troll and a tree, he cringed as the troll raised its massive club. He waited. Waited for the pain. Waited for death.

Blurb and Links -

Leading an army of faeries and pixies into battle against mountain trolls was not what Cadi expected when she accepted the task of rescuing Ewen - the son of the Overseer of the Faeries.

Squire Ewen followed his liege into battle with a head full of romantic notions of knights, heroics, and damsels in distress. Being captured by a troll, thrown into a cave, and awaiting a hideous death was not how he had foreseen his adventure to play out.

Can Ewen stay out of trouble long enough for Cadi to rescue him? Will Cadi overcome her doubts and fears and bring her beloved Ewen home to Plucks Ridge?

Or will the petty evilness of The Scorned One defeat all and destroy the magickal realm?

If you love action, humour, quirky characters, and romance, then Daryl Devoré’s latest medieval fantasy romance – A Voice in the Air – is a must read.
