A Bit of History Today on Fridays in Space #FridaysinSpace #space

Jet Propulsion Laboratory Director Dr. William Pickering, Dr. James van Allen of the State University of Iowa, and Army Ballistic missionile Agency Technical Director Dr. Wernher von Braun triumphantly display a model of the Explorer I, America's first satellite, shortly after the satellite's launch on January 31, 1958. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory packed and tested the payload, a radiation detection experiment designed by Dr. van Allen. Dr. von Braun's rocket team at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, developed the Juno I launch vehicle, a modified Jupiter-C.

Since she inherited her parents’ home, Cara Eckford has used walks in the nearby woods as inspiration for her art, so she is shocked and upset upon finding that ‘No Trespassing’ signs have recently been put up on the property. But when she angrily confronts the land’s new owner, the infuriatingly sexy Luke McCrae, she merely earns herself a stern scolding and a sound spanking.
Despite her irritation, Luke’s bold dominance leaves Cara’s heart racing and her panties soaked. He soon proves more than ready to tame her fiery temper with his belt applied to her bare bottom, but even with tears in her eyes and her backside on fire Cara’s need for Luke cannot be denied, and when he takes her in his arms his masterful lovemaking satisfies her deeply.
Cara’s newfound romance with Luke grows stronger and more passionate with each passing day, but when conflict over his plans for her beloved forest threatens to tear them apart, can she make use of her powerful connection to both of their ancestors to convince him to change his mind?

Excerpt

The sight of Cara’s well-padded buttocks bent over his knee had woken Luke’s desire with breathtaking ferocity. He’d spanked her to discourage her from defying his rights as a property owner and neighbor, to teach her some civility. He hadn’t expected to enjoy spanking her so much. He hadn’t expected to want to lay her down and make love to her right on the spot.
When he was finished, he was already hoping for an excuse to spank her again, hopeful that it might lead to something cozier than just a bottom-warming. The flush burning up her neck when he helped her back to her feet suggested that she hadn’t hated the experience either. She couldn’t hide the fact that her nipples had stiffened to hard pebbles that pushed against the thin fabric of her t-shirt.
So when she demanded to be set free, he did so while warning her of the consequences of any further disruption to his plans. Her reputation for stubbornness and being a tree hugger said he could count on paddling that gorgeous backside again some time. If he could get her past her romantic opposition to his development plans, they might even have some fun together.
“Every time,” he repeated. “Understand?”
Cara said nothing. She nodded with a half-smile, treating him to an innocent, wide-eyed look that was as genuine as a three-dollar bill.
He released her anyway. He couldn’t call her a liar without proof.
She was much prettier than he’d expected and no less spirited. The way her eyes dilated as she looked at him made his cock stiffen.
Grandpa’s lawyers had warned him that she wanted the land, but he’d done his homework. The value of raw acres was a fraction of what it would be if he cleared it and subdivided it into a tidy collection of small lots. She was going to have to get used to the idea, that was all there was to it.
He turned on his charm. “I’ve heard a lot about you, Cara. Everyone agrees you’re smart as a whip and unafraid of things that make keep most people awake at night.”
“What is there to be frightened of on Salt Spring Island?” Cara snorted before pulling herself a bit taller. She treated him to another empty smile.
He noted the effort it took her to stifle the flare of temper. Unskilled in the artificial body language of the corporate world where people were practiced at concealing their true feelings, she was easy to read. Advantage: Luke.

Libby Campbell in her own words:
I’m in love with love. My romance stories feature strong, self-reliant women who challenge the powerful men who love them.
My books are set in the Pacific Northwest, a part of the world I know well and love deeply.
I’ve lived all over Canada, but the best decision of my life was when I moved to Australia to marry my leading man. After many years there, we moved back to the Pacific Northwest. We now live in a leafy neighborhood close to the sea.
My passions are reading and writing. I also love hiking, beachcombing, and an occasional night of dancing.

Author Q&A:

Where did this story come from?
I spend a lot of time on Salt Spring Island, hiking the forests, enjoying its beaches. Many of the forests were logged about a hundred years ago. Walking past the moss-covered stumps, some of which are six feet tall, feels like walking with ghosts.
Naturally some people would like to log these forests again. While I’m sure there are some places where fewer trees wouldn’t be a disaster, it would be sad to see many of the magnificent trees removed.

Cara is quite a firecracker. Is she based on anyone you know?
Nope. She came to me fully formed. I felt like were old friends from the day she pushed into my life and said, ‘write my story.’
Salt Spring Island has a huge artistic community: artists, writers, musicians and dancers. Cara would fit right in.

Some of the characters are from the far past. Where did those characters pop up?
I don’t know why but when the book was forming in my mind in the late spring, I kept seeing images of WWI soldiers. Even though the Owen and McCrae families were farmers and might have had an exemption for their sons, I knew that Frank McCrae would want to enlist and do his duty.
WWI tragically shatters the love between Amaruq Owen and Frank McCrae. It’s the legacy of their unfulfilled passion that brings Cara and Luke together.
The families are named for two WWI poets, Wilfred Owen (Dulce et Decorum Est) and John McCrae (In Flanders Fields) who shaped my thinking about war at an early age.

Memories of warm, loving Christmases tried to surge forward. Daryl Devore's Love in the Key of C #MFRWhooks #MFRWAuthor #Christmasshort #sweetromance

APOLOGIES for not visiting anybody last week - I woke up with a 101.4 fever and spend most of the day on the couch asleep or staring at the TV. Felt fine the next day. Weird?!?!

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. It's a chance each week for you the reader to discover current WIP or previously published book by possibly new to you authors.

Today, I am showcasing a snippet from my Christmas short – Love in the Key of C

Does hunger cause hallucinations? I'll have to do a search on that once I have money…and a smart phone…and a chocolate éclair in my hand with one waiting on a gold-rimmed plate. I stumbled, but caught myself. I really must try to stay here—in this reality. Where had that street gone? Prosperous Street. Or was it Proposal Road? I'd only lived in the city for a few months and still had a lot to learn about the roads, boroughs and subway lines.
I shuffled along the residential block passed two-storey houses trimmed with Christmas wreaths, smiling Santas and strings of Christmas lights. I could imagine them sparkling against the darkness of the night as the ones had at the house where I grew up.
Memories of warm, loving Christmases tried to surge forward. I crushed them with a runny nose sniff, then swiped my sleeve across my upper lip.
At the corner, I turned to the right. With the church behind me, I had to be heading in the correct direction. The soul-uplifting sound of a Christmas carol floated out through an open door just a few feet away. It was a massive gray brick building. I didn't recognize it, but then this was probably the back or side entrance. A man—in his late-twenties, so about my age—stepped outside and inhaled and released a big breath.
He was tall, dressed in a faded pair of jeans, sneakers and a wonderfully warm looking, red, down-filled coat. Yes, jealousy surged in me as I pulled my thin denim fall jacket closer to me.
My feet edged me closer. It had to be my feet doing it on their own. My instinct was to turn and scurry off in any other direction, like a mouse avoiding a predator. But my feet dragged me closer to the music and the man.
He glanced to his left and smiled at me.

Scene from Daryl Devore's Christmas Short - Love in the Key of C #Christmasshort #Christmasstory #novella

Excerpt

A police officer strode toward me. His brow creased. Was he worried about my collapsing on the sidewalk? Or was he concerned for the Christmas shoppers, having their joyous holiday spending frenzy interrupted by the pitiful sight of me?
Turns out it was my second guess. He held my elbow and directed me to move along as he steered me toward a side street. I protested saying—or rather, lying—that I'd slipped and fallen. But after a quick scan of my unkempt appearance, I knew that he knew I wasn't being totally honest.
He pointed down the side street, Prospect Avenue, and told me about a soup kitchen that was a couple of blocks up behind a large stone church. He smiled, rubbed his stomach, then told me the aroma had been very tempting when he passed by earlier in his shift.
I offered up a grateful smile and hobbled on partially frozen feet in the direction of my first meal in two days. I walked along dreaming about hot chicken noodle soup. Warm broth slipping over my tongue and down into the cavern that was my stomach. Floppy noodles trying to slip off my spoon, but with a quick slurp I'd catch them all.
Little round green peas nestled in a spoon next to a piece of actual, honest to goodness chicken. The thought of the aroma made me lick my dry, chapped lips in anticipation. Or maybe it would be beef vegetable. A dark, rich broth filled with colorful vegetables. My stomach was torn between protesting its emptiness and celebrating the future meal.
Have I mentioned that fate's a bitch? As I neared the church, the fantasy aroma of soup morphed into the stench of charred wood and acrid smoke. I passed the church and stumbled to a stop. The soup kitchen had burned to the ground. Twenty or so people stood around, either hugging each other or staring numbly at the destruction.

Red's adventure on the Emerald Forest Cruise Ship Daryl Devore's twisted fairy tale on Weekend Writing Warrior. #8sunday #twisted_fairy

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors! Where writers share an 8- 10 sentence snippet of their writing on Sunday.  Visit other participants on the list and read and comment on their 8sunday posts.
Spread the word. Twitter hashtag #8sunday.

Continuing with my twisted fairy tale- Dark Chocolate and Strawberries. Red is sent on a cruise to rescue her grandmother. She meets a tall dark stranger. As she heads to her cabin, she steps out of the elevator and bumps into...

She laughed and looked past the ticket at the man. He was nicely built, blue eyes and sandy blond hair and cheeks with adorable dimples. “No, I've cruised before.”
“This is my first. I'm so lost. Oh, I said that already.” He took a big breath and released it. “Andrew Woodsman. My friends call me Chopper.”

What's a naughty fairy tale like Red Riding Hood without Red, the huntsman, grandma and especially, the big bad wolf?

Esmerelda 'Red' Hood is summoned to her mother's executive suite only to learn her sweet granny is headed for a romantic cruise with a gigolo. Horrified, Red races off to save her grandma before it's too late.

On board, Red meets Andrew Woodsman and Willem Olf. One a cutie with the biggest puppy eyes and the other a dark, sophisticated predator. Her grandmother's warning rings in Red's ear "Never trust a wolf in sheep's clothing."

Even with the warning, Red has trouble choosing which man could be the big bad wolf and which could be her happily ever after.

Note: This book was previously published by New Dawning Bookfair under the title Sexy Red Hood.
