Today, I am showcasing a snippet from my sweet medieval romance – A Voice in the Air.
Scene
Set – Cadi is having doubts.
Excerpt -
Aderyn swallowed her ale. “How did the training go this morn?”
The tears tried to well up, but Cadi held strong. She stared at her piece of goat cheese. Not wanting to admit to feeling like she would fail in her quest, she pressed her lips together and remained silent.
Fira reached a long finger under Cadi’s chin and lifted it. “I believe it is time to tell ye a story. But first ye must eat. Ye need the food to nourish yer body.”
Cadi lifted her gaze and stared into the soft green eyes of the faerie queen. There she saw faith in her. Faith, that she, Cadi — simple barmaid — could set forth on this quest to rescue Ewen. And maybe even be successful.
Failure terrified her. She could die. Ewen could die.
But how could she fight? The sword was too big. Too heavy. She could barely stay on her horse when it was strolling along a path. But to charge down a hill. She shook her head.
Fira rubbed her fingertips along Cadi’s forehead. “Rest yer mind. Let the flow of thoughts cease. Eat.”
Cadi bit her slice of the cheese, letting the sweet tang fill her mouth. Aderyn handed her a chunk of bread. She popped a piece between her lips, the roughness of the texture covering the smoothness of the cheese. The sun-warmed ale washed out the other flavours then slid down her throat. Her focus had calmed and shifted to her meal; the pounding of her heart slowed while the sense of dread eased. She shifted from resting on her heels to sitting on the blanket. Lifting her face to the sky, she let the warmth of the sun’s rays on her cheeks comfort her.
Bleak thoughts tried to sneak forward. Thoughts of failure. Of self-doubt. She quieted them. She did not need confusion festering in her. She could be strong. She could be successful.
Swallowing the last bite of the last apple, Fira spoke, breaking into Cadi’s silence. “Tis time to tell ye a tale. See the ruins before ye.”
Blurb and Links -
Leading an army of faeries and pixies into battle against mountain trolls was not what Cadi expected when she accepted the task of rescuing Ewen - the son of the Overseer of the Faeries.
Squire Ewen followed his liege into battle with a head full of romantic notions of knights, heroics, and damsels in distress. Being captured by a troll, thrown into a cave, and awaiting a hideous death was not how he had foreseen his adventure to play out.
Can Ewen stay out of trouble long enough for Cadi to rescue him? Will Cadi overcome her doubts and fears and bring her beloved Ewen home to Plucks Ridge?
Or will the petty evilness of The Scorned One defeat all and destroy the magickal realm?
