I have never met a faerie. A Voice in the Air on #MFRWhooks #MFRWAuthor #sweet #medieval #fantasy #romance

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. It's a chance each week for you the reader to discover current WIP or previously published book by possibly new to you authors.

Today, I am showcasing a snippet from my sweet medieval romance – A Voice in the Air.

First off -  This is my last week for a while. I am taking a break from blogging and just enjoying summer. Everyone stay healthy and I'll be back in Sept with a new release

Scene Set – Cadi meets a faerie and receives a gift.

Excerpt -

“Kamelot must be protected.” Fira closed her eyes. “Aife. The time has come.”

A small entity appeared on the blanket in front of Cadi and Aderyn. She was no bigger than Cadi’s fist. Dressed in dark green, leather leggings and a yellow tunic, the faerie’s blue hair flowed about her head like Fira’s did, even though there was no breeze.

The faerie stared at Aderyn. She pointed to herself. “Aife. Be ye Cadi?”

With a small grin on her lips, Aderyn pointed to her right.

The faerie shifted her position then pointed at her chest, again. “Aife. Be ye Cadi?”

Cadi bowed her head. “I am Cadi.”

The faerie stuck out her hand. “Then Aife and Cadi are friends. Aife has never met a Big.”

As gently as she could, Cadi shook the tiny hand. “I have never met a faerie.”

The steed Aderyn had ridden to their site, lifted his head and snorted.

A grey horse bounded up the side of the hill. She stopped near the blanket and bowed her head. Aife raced over and ran up her leg. She sat on the horse’s head between the ears. “This is Cheffyl.”

Cadi rubbed her hand along the grey neck. “She is a large horse for ye.”

Aife laughed so hard, she rolled backwards down the horse’s neck, landing on its back. “Nay. Cheffyl is not Aife’s horse. Cheffyl is for Cadi.”

 Blurb and Links -

Leading an army of faeries and pixies into battle against mountain trolls was not what Cadi expected when she accepted the task of rescuing Ewen - the son of the Overseer of the Faeries.

Squire Ewen followed his liege into battle with a head full of romantic notions of knights, heroics, and damsels in distress. Being captured by a troll, thrown into a cave, and awaiting a hideous death was not how he had foreseen his adventure to play out.

Can Ewen stay out of trouble long enough for Cadi to rescue him? Will Cadi overcome her doubts and fears and bring her beloved Ewen home to Plucks Ridge?

Or will the petty evilness of The Scorned One defeat all and destroy the magickal realm?

If you love action, humour, quirky characters, and romance, then Daryl Devoré’s latest medieval fantasy romance – A Voice in the Air – is a must read.

The legends are partly true. As legends often are. Time confuses the story.

Scene Set – Cadi hears a tale.

Excerpt -

Cadi craned her neck to see where Fira pointed. “Aye. The legends tell us it belonged to a magickal people. A terrible war was fought, and the people fled to a land far to the south.”

“The legends are partly true.” Fira released a sad sigh. “As legends often are. Time confuses the story.”

Aderyn cleaned up the meal, then stood, preparing to leave.

“No. Sit.” The faerie queen pointed to the blanket. “Give Cadi companionship. Learn.”

Fira folded her hands on her lap. Staring at the ruins, she began. “A long time ago there was one who was the ancient of all. Her time had come to leave this existence. An heir was sought. The decision was between I and another, a revered magickal. On the final test The Scorned One was found to be lacking.”

Releasing a soft sigh, she continued. Her voice full of emotion as she spoke about the delights of the life the faeries led. How they worked with the Earth Goddess, keeping the land lush and fertile. A darkness came over her as she spoke about the day the Scorned One brought the elves from the north to ravage the area.

“She told them all they needed to know. It was as if she had unlocked the door to our world - the world of the faeries. They knew our weaknesses. They took everything they could carry. Their greed knew no limit. No one from the village came to help us. We had no weapons. There was nothing we could save.”

Cadi could only guess at the pain that flooded the faerie overseer as she stared at the ruins.

Fira continued, “They were much more brazen the next time they returned. They raided the village. Stealing cattle, harvested grains and bales of wool. Some villagers helped us chase them away. Others were too scared the elves would return and rob them. Better to cower than to fight.”

What colour crayon is Daryl Devore? Find out on the #OpenBook Blog Hop #writers #DarylDevore

Welcome to the Open Book Blog Hop! This week’s theme -

People are like a box of crayons, which crayon would you say that you are?

Purple. It is supposed to represent creativity, royalty, femininity, and spirituality.

Well, 2 out of 4 is ok.  I am creative and I'm female. But I am soooooooooooooo far from the royal throne and spirituality isn't my thing.

But I've always liked purple because it's quirky. I've never fit into the stereotypes society likes to stick on people. I tend to think of myself as a bit quirky so I'll go with purple. And yes, as a teenager my bedroom walls were painted purple. But I think the day after I left for university my parents repainted them.

This week's excerpt is from my medieval fantasy romance – A Voice in the Air

Scene Set –Ewen's thoughts of Cadi are interrupted.

Excerpt

A noise snapped Ewen from his thoughts. He placed the remains of his loaf on the ground and covered it with the rocks. He slowed his breaths to hear better. He couldn’t identify where the sound came from or what had made it. The trolls happened by every so often, seemingly to annoy him. But more likely to assure themselves he was still there. They would shove their tree size clubs in and poke about, hoping to hit him. That’s when he’d learned the safest place was in the furthermost back corner. And there he hid.

A wee bit more

Seated with his shoulders and hips pressed against the wall, he waited for the sound. With his focus on the cave, not on memories, he should be able to catch from where the sound came.

He waited.

And waited.

 Excerpt

Five years - Julie hadn't seen or thought about him in all that time, and now in the middle of nowhere, he stood on the beach drying off from a swim. Droplets flew as Robert shook his hair. His black mane was shorter than the last time she saw him. The wet ends dripped water on his bare, muscular shoulders. Tricia, an old high school friend, once said he had the body of a male stripper - time hadn't changed that.

Julie stepped back onto the beach path, transfixed by the sight of the one person she hated. Her repulsion and loathing of him ran so deep she'd repressed all memories of him. She thought he'd loved her, and had taken a chance, opening up her heart and body to him. But instead of returning her love, he proved himself worthy of the gutter from which he'd crawled.

Her body said run, but her feet refused to move as she watched a long-legged, svelte, golden blonde rise from the beach chair. She trickled her fingers down his rippled stomach. His voice floated across the sand. It was a calming sound, which had brought a smile to Julie's face when he whispered words of love and passion.

Details she thought she'd long forgotten surged forward. She remembered the way his dark eyes smouldered with anger and his sly, innocent grin. His joyous laughter had made her feel the abandonment of a child frolicking in the year's first snowfall. She moved along the path, distancing herself from the lovers as the blonde undid the strings on her bathing suit top, letting it fall to the sand.
