Discover what made Daryl Devore almost give up writing on #BooksandMore #mackadebloghop #DarylDevore #author

This week's theme - What made you almost give up - writing.

Arrogance. The simple 1 word answer - arrogance. Both of the person who was editing my work and - I will confess - myself as well.

The editor at the time snapped in one of her comments - that I should take a course on writing.

Bitch, please. I can write. Problem was - Shifting from academic writing to commercial fiction was a surprise.

She was pompous and arrogant in her comments which got my back up and I got pompous-er and arrogant-er.

And for 2 weeks, I quit. Screw it. It wasn't worth it. But the stories in my head wanted out. So I wrote them. I refused to allow her to edit my work.

Arrogance on my part. She had some good ideas - but she presented them wrong. The editor needed editing.

I am a retired teacher. I know you can point out an error in a way that helps the person see the mistake and be willing to listen. Or you can smash them on the head and yell they are stupid - and then be amazed when they don't listen and walk away.

Now hop over and read the other blog posts and - get to know them better. https://viviana-mackade.blog/all-the-things-blog-hop-bookblogger-booklover-bookworm-mackadebloghop/

Daryl Devore talks about whether there is an author she "stalks" on social media or not on the #OpenBook Blog Hop #writers #DarylDevore

Welcome to the Open Book Blog Hop! This week’s theme - Are there other writers you ‘stalk’ on social media? Who and why?

Quick answer - no.

Why - Because she's dead.

If I was going to stalk an author it would be either Agatha Christie or Dorothy L Sayers. I grew up reading their books and still love them. I didn't ready Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys, I went straight to British Murder Mysteries.

Leading an army of faeries and pixies into battle against mountain trolls was not what Cadi expected. Daryl Devore's A Voice in the Air on #WeWrWa #8Sunday #medieval #fantasy #romance

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors! Where writers share an excerpt of their writing on Sunday.  Visit other participants on the list and read and comment on their 8sunday posts.

This week's excerpt is from my medieval fantasy romance – A Voice in the Air

Scene Set
–Cadi speaks her mind.

 Excerpt –

Many thought she had no rights or a say in matters, being over sixteen years, still unwed, and from away. A man-less woman was worth less than a cow. But she did not believe that to be so. The fighter in her raised its voice.

“Look.” She pointed at the crowd. “All are paired up. The injured men have left with their womenfolk. The dead are grieved over by their loved ones. Marwyn stands alone. His son has not returned.”

Without acknowledging she had spoken, the sheriff snapped an order at a guard then hurried away.

Ran like a scared mouse. Will not answer the simple question of a woman.

Disheartened at the sheriff’s lack of concern, Cadi turned. Two lads were leading the horse-drawn wagons to the monastic stables. Steeling her nerves, she crept closer to the wagons and peered inside. Empty.

The abbot’s frown caught her attention.

“Ewen,” she explained. “He is not here. He did not ride in. Nor…” she tilted her head to the wagon and shuddered. “Thirty-three men left. Thirty-two have returned.”

Blurb and Links

Leading an army of faeries and pixies into battle against mountain trolls was not what Cadi expected when she accepted the task of rescuing Ewen - the son of the Overseer of the Faeries.

Squire Ewen followed his liege into battle with a head full of romantic notions of knights, heroics, and damsels in distress. Being captured by a troll, thrown into a cave, and awaiting a hideous death was not how he had foreseen his adventure to play out.

Can Ewen stay out of trouble long enough for Cadi to rescue him? Will Cadi overcome her doubts and fears and bring her beloved Ewen home to Plucks Ridge?

Or will the petty evilness of The Scorned One defeat all and destroy the magickal realm?

If you love action, humour, quirky characters, and romance, then Daryl Devoré’s latest medieval fantasy romance – A Voice in the Air – is a must read.

A writer's short rant on Daryl Devore's My Books My Blog My Post #writer #edits #rant

No, I'm not going to rant about the weather. Although, winter is NOT my favourite season of the year.

No, what I'm silently chuckling about is edits and corrections. Those who know me know I have a heck of an issue with being corrected in my writing.

I accept I make typos - I can read the line - I sea the cat - and not see the mistake.

I use 2 editing programs to help catch those. And this is where the fun starts.

First I love to confuse them. I put a comma in a sentence - editing program 1 says - take it out. Editing program 2 says - put it in. BUT - when I put it in - editing program 2 then says - take it out.

That so makes my day. I'm weird, I know.

And if I choose to write a phrase a certain way - that's how I want it written. The editing programs are fine, but still not set up for fiction writers - especially ones doing medieval stories. I am driving them crazy. "Why he be doing that?" is perfectly fine in the proper context.

It's this that annoys me - and I know it's a little thing - but it is the little things that catch us.

I think I should know what my character's name is and how he/she spells it.

I've been told this more than once and not only by an editing program. I had an editor fix every misspelled version of a main character's name. Thing was - the misspelling was important for a twist at the end of the book.

So, dear editors and editing programs - please stop assuming we writers don't have a clue about what we are doing. We sorta, kinda do.

(I can just imagine the editing program clenching its processors at that line and a human editor stammering - but...but...)

Here's a happy meme to brighten your day. Because I could have also included auto correct.

No one would ever know painful secret hidden in her heart. A Voice in the Air on #MFRWhooks #MFRWAuthor #sweet #medieval #fantasy #romance

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. It's a chance each week for you the reader to discover current WIP or previously published book by possibly new to you authors.

I messed up last week and some of you ended up at Weekend Writing Warriors - which is roughly the same excerpt.

Today, I am showcasing a snippet from my sweet medieval romance – A Voice in the Air.

Scene Set – Continuing the opening scene.

Excerpt -

At the sight of Parry’s injuries, a hush settled on the crowd. Cadi stepped aside. She had no husband, father, or son to greet. Ewen was not hers. She dreamt of the day when a knight’s squire and a barmaid became betrothed. She had privately wept when he’d left to fight the – dare she even think the word? When he’d left to fight the trolls.

She had heard the word whispered in the pub. The local men had gone to fight not a human enemy, but creatures too big and vicious to be imagined.

The Father Abbot sternly preached that there were no trolls, no dragons, nor no faeries. No magickal creatures walked the earth, only humans. Angels and demons were beings of God and Satan. She’d learned to silence her tongue after witnessing the brutality of the punishment for doubting the Father Abbot’s word.

A gasp from the crowd brought Cadi out of her thoughts.

Six more horses entered the village square. Six more wives or mothers screeched with gladness.

Then no more.

The crowd waited.

Hopes dwindled.

Fear consumed souls.

Thirty-three men had answered the call to fight. Seven broken men returned.

Damnation to the trolls. Cadi pressed her lips together. She would not openly grieve. No one would ever know the love burning in her now broken heart.

Social Media - Love it or Maybe Not So much? Daryl Devore talks about her love/hate with social media on the #BooksandMore #mackadebloghop #DarylDevore #author

This week's theme - Social Media - Love or Hate?

Neither. I don't love social media. It's been to bastardized. I don't hate it. I use it. Note this blog. It will get tweeted several times.

What I do dislike about social media is author related. At first we were told - you have to be on FB. That's how books get sold. So we all went to FB. Shortly thereafter - oh -FB is dead. Everyone is at.... and it just goes on and on. Currently up to TikTok but waiting to see what's next.

Daryl Devore talks about Easter Eggs in her books on the #OpenBook Blog Hop #writers #DarylDevore

Welcome to the Open Book Blog Hop! This week’s theme - Do you include any inside jokes or Easter eggs in your work?

Yes and no. One of my cps (critique partners) says she loves my Easter Eggs, but I didn't put them there. I barely understand the concept.

Also - in a review -

The author does a great job with word play as it pertains to the ‘Robin Hood’ theme, and the Easter Egg with regards to the air line pilot.

I - truly - have no idea what the reviewer is talking about. The pilot is just a pilot.

So it seems I've used an Easter Egg or 2. How? I have no idea.
