On today’s Backlist Saturday Spotlight – Brace for Impact blurb and some back story to the writing of this book.
Several years ago, I was asked to write a story for a box set collection. The other writers were all ones I knew and respected so I was happy and humbled to join the group. We all belonged to the same critique group, so we had pretty much read each other's work. Our creations in the romance genre ranged from hot to western to paranormal to contemporary.
We roughed out the basic outline of the story. A plane crash forces the lovers together. If I remember correctly there were 5 stories. 4 became tropical romances and one a northern romance.
One small issue.
At first we were going to have the idea of all the crashes landed around the same island. So 6 different versions of the crash. But...we all started the story differently.
If I remember correctly...
One had the plane staying afloat in the ocean.
One had it almost immediately sinking.
One had it staying a float and then several hours latter sinking.
And 1 had it crash on land.
With this as an impossible thing to "fix", we shrugged our shoulders, wrote our stories and published them as a crash romance collection.
After a few months, the collection was taken off Amazon and we were allowed to release our stories.
So that's how Braced for Impact came to be and why it's short. (We were under a word count limit.)
My hero is French Canadian and at one point I had him speaking in a stereo-typical French Canadian accent. Drop the Hs. Hello become 'ello. TH become D. That there - becomes - dat dere.
I think several readers got rather annoyed with the accent. Although it was only in one chapter. My response - writers take chances. Some work. Some don't. Readers love them. Readers don't. I think it went with the story and have no regrets having done it.

What could be simpler than a routine plane trip from Toronto, Canada to Caracas, Venezuela for a rookie flight attendant and a sexy R.C.M.P. officer?
But Fate had other intentions.
After leaving a disastrous marriage, Paix Allcot begins a new career as a flight attendant. The romance of travel plus the desperate need to be on any other continent other than the one her ex is on seems like a dream job. For the first time, Paix is no longer a trainee and the passengers in economy class are under her care. Especially the handsome passenger seated in 36C.
Guy Lapierre, undercover officer, is following a vicious human-trafficker. He has little time for relationships. Too many innocent lives are at stake. But when the plane crashes and Guy is stranded on a tropical island, he is forced to work with Paix to survive until he discovers that the man he is tracking is Paix's older brother.
Can a pink bra and a hot night on the side of a volcano save the relationship and their lives?
