Daryl Devore's Musings - Out with the newsletter and in with the... read blog to find out. #author #readers #books #writingcommunity

Newsletter be gone! I have had enough!!!!!!!!!!

I seem to be the only person who can't figure it out. After thinking long and hard about what the problem was, I came to the conclusion that the universe was talking to me. It was screaming - NEWSLETTERS AREN'T YOUR THING! - but I wasn't listening. I mean - everyone has a newsletter. Writers have to have a newsletter - to get readers - to get sales - to make those millions - to buy that yacht!!

I digress.

As I was explaining why I decided to get rid of my newsletter the answer suddenly became obvious. A newsletter is impersonal.

I always felt like I was writing it to toss it into the void. There wasn't really a person on the other end of the newsletter. An actual human who would read it.

To solve that - I created my author group. Actually 2 of them. One on Facebook and one on MeWe.

Why? Because some people have sworn off FB and I don't wish to lose the few readers that I have.

The link is directly to the group so a member doesn't have to go through the chaos of the main pages.

What will being a member offer? A chance to talk with me :-) . OK, not quite enough - how about cover reveals before the world wide release - sneak peek excerpts, character bios, inside tidbits, contests and possibly off the wall things like chocolate chip cookie recipes.

But what it really will involve is communication. I can chat with my readers and discover what they like, dislike and/or want more of. And in a world where we are so isolated from each other - a group where we can meet and chat is a pretty wonderful idea.

Below are the links to the groups. Can you only be in one? Heck no. Join both if you wish. I am only trying to make it simpler for those who aren't in love with social media.

  1. Oh my dear, you just opened a can of worms. I can't succeed with the newsletter thing to save my life. I just switched over to Mailer Lite from Tiny Letter and have managed to get only one new subscriber. The time I spend trying to figure out how to make newsletters work for me is time I'm not writing or doing other types of promotions that are at least somewhat effective. Newsletter campaigns are something I would happily pay someone else to manage. I truly despise them, and I can't for the life of me understand how some people end up with a gigazillion subscribers when I can't even break ten!
I only do the newsletter once a month but my failure to gain subscribers lives rent-free in my head. I would much rather invest my thought process in something more pleasant and worthwhile.
