I think it’s
about time that we can talk about that cliffhanger.
What
cliffhanger??
The end of
What Happens in Bangkok that provoked a range of opinions from – didn't bother
me in the least – to – I hate cliffhangers!!!!
What is a
cliffhanger? Popped over to Wikipedia because that definition dealt more with
fiction – books/movies
A cliffhanger or cliffhanger ending
is a plot device in fiction which features a main character in a precarious or
difficult dilemma, or confronted with a shocking revelation at the end of an episode
of serialized fiction. A cliffhanger is hoped to ensure the audience will
return to see how the characters resolve the dilemma.
Some serials end with the caveat "To Be
Continued..." or "The End?"
Exactly! A
cliffhanger is hoped to ensure the audience will return to see how the
characters resolve the dilemma.
I got Darien
and Erika together. He gives her a ring and promises to be faithful. So the
romantic HEA (happily every after) is solid. If the two people have promised to
love one another forever – why write a second book?
I can just
hear some people- simple – you have the couple break up in the second book. So,
I can force a break up of a couple after they've vowed to be happily ever after
and that is an acceptable premise for a book 2 – but leaving an unanswered
question isn't?
Both are
simply plot devices. If every book ended the same, then why bother writing or
reading? At the point at which the reader knows who the 2 main characters are –
they then know the end of the story.
Yes – it's
the journey of the book that makes it unique, I know that. How did the author
get them to the HEA? But – it's already a given that there will be one. And I
gave the reader the HEA.
Then I had
reality happen. Life isn't always perfect. Erika and Darien were happy in their
little cocoon. Now it's time to shake it up. And that is certainly what the
"Hello, Darien." did.
How do I see
the cliffhanger protest? 2 ways
1st
- annoying as heck- reviewer plastered it all over the review – so other
like-minded people won't even give the book a chance- they won't read/buy it.
2nd
– I love it – it provoked a visceral reaction from the reviewer. That means my
characters and story got to them. And that is a good thing.
Will I
continue to write books with a cliffhanger?
If the story calls for it. Cliffhangers are not that unusual. I'd say
pretty much every TV show you watch wraps up their season finale with a
cliffhanger to get the viewer back the following September.
I can name
two "mildly" successful movies that ended with cliffhangers – the
original Star Wars and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt 1
Did the
world end because of the cliffhanger? No – we're all still here. Will that
reviewer ever read another one of my books? Probably not. Did I lose sales
because of that review? Probably.
But that's
all part of the writing game. Good reviews and not so good reviews. So yes, I’ll
someday I may write a 3rd book with a cliffhanger. What Happens in
Bangkok was the 2nd cliffhanger I wrote.
Will I take
the heat for it?
Yup. I’m not
going to let people dictate how I write my stories.
If I could
just toss this out there - and I know I’ll get grief for saying this – but to
the cliffhanger haters – please don’t paste it all over the review. You scare
others off. Just because you don’t like cliffhangers doesn’t mean they will.
Scaring them away from the book loses me a sale and another person at chance at
a good read.
Ok – your turn
to rant back at me.
To save Darien's life his brother asks, "Can you walk
in high heels?"
Erika Bailey,
owner/manager of a drag queen club in Bangkok, Thailand has happily settled
into all aspects of her new life, except for her lack of a love life. When a
new diva auditions, Erika is bewildered over her instant attraction to the
blond God, Apollo.
Darien Scott is
on vacation after a world tour and mistakenly figures the safest place to be is
at The Black Dragon with the head of a Triad. When the club is hit, Darien is
the only person to get out alive. Now
he's running from the police and a Triad. Mistake number 1.
Disguised as a drag queen, he's hired by Erika, but falls
hard for his new boss, then struggles with not coming clean with her. Mistake
number 2.
Can he fix his mistakes and find a life filled with love or
is he headed straight for mistake number 3?
