This week's 8-10 sentences are from my medieval fantasy romance – The Last Dragon

Scene set – We are switching over to Prince Hawkyns. He was rescued and taken into town. He is healing. He slips off into a dream.

His wife knelt next to where he lay on the grass. A coy smile on her lips. Her long black tresses framing her face and neck. She unfurled her thin fingers, grasped his hand and rested it on her belly. “I am with child. Ye have done yer duty. When I bear this son, the future of the kingdom is secure.”

“A son?”

“The alchemist, Malum has foreseen that I will bear the future king of Penrythe. Soon ye shall sit on yer throne with me by yer side and we will rule the kingdom.”

A wee bit more

He laughed. “Nay. Not too soon. My father is as robust as the day he took the throne.”

“But there are dangers. Dragons. Spells. Evil curses. Ye must be ready to be king.”

She leaned closer, brushing her lips across his cheek. “Ye do wish to be king? To be the noble and wise leader for our son.” She lowered the shoulders of her gown.

What do dragons, knights and romance have in common? Grab a copy of multi-published author Daryl Devore’s medieval fantasy romance – The Last Dragon and discover the answer.

A sorcerer craving dominance merged with a dragon, the power overwhelmed him causing him to split into three dragons. Demora ruled thought, but was lost in time. Yidithe offered protection, shining like the light of the sun. Ayrradex craved chaos, revelling in destroying souls.

Many knights died, attempting to slay the devil beast. One knight, Prince Hawkyns, did not fear death. He’d lost everything. Away on a mission when Ayrradex attacked his fathers kingdom, Penrythe, Hawkyns returned to find his noble father – feeble and defeated. His wise mother – crazed. His beautiful wife and unborn child - dead. Only a pile of ashes remained for him to bury. He knelt before his King and vowed to slay the devil-beast or be slain.

Derry was born with powers that terrified her parents. They delivered her to a nunnery to be raised in secret. Jathe, a wise sorceress, discovered the young girl and trained her to one day use the secret hidden in her soul.

Legends spoken around campfires hinted the sole way to destroy Ayrradex was when the hearts of a knight and a golden dragon became one. But after a vicious battle with Ayrradex, the golden dragon was thought to be dead.

Can Prince Hawkyns’s bravery and Derry’s powers end the reign of the devil-beast’s terror?

  1. What a satisfying dream--at least it looks like he's about to be satisfied! I'm sure he hopes this dream will come true! Great snippet!

  2. How sad to read this snippet and to see how it ends in the blurb. Truly a prince with nothing to lose.

  3. I'm not sure if this woman is good or bad, but she sounds sort of power-hungry.

The 'brogue' is excellent. Really pulls me in. :-)

  4. Hmmm, the wife seems suspiciously ready for him to take the throne. Great snippet!

  5. I'm curious as to whether she's found a way to communicate with him through dreams, or if truly is nothing more than a dream. Reveals a lot about their personalities, though.

  6. Something about her doesn't seem quite kosher, but then I am a suspicious sort...

  7. This sounds less like a dream and more like a magical message to him.

  8. I have a feeling that this is an ominous dream rather than an erotic one.
