Six Sisters of Shame
Victorian men & their mistresses
Victorian men were well known to take a mistress for their pleasure, yet, when Douglas offers each of his best friends one of Angelica’s daughters, they get most outraged. Douglas explains how each of these young women (21 yrs of age) match perfectly to one of them. Yet all four of the gentlemen objected. Not surprisingly, the one fellow of lesser birth, Sinjin, happily accepts his lovely young woman. Never has he found someone more delightful and enchanting. But then he is a rake.
Douglas wants his gentlemen friends to pay money that will go into an account for his daughters. Thus, when he dies, his girls will have funds to be self-sufficient. The men are outraged that a) Douglas wishes to choose their mistress, b) Douglas expects to be paid, and c) Douglas doesn’t seem to comprehend how outrageous his suggestion is!
Nevermind, all his friends would be better off if they accepted his daughters.
So Douglas retracts his offer to the four gentlemen and instead invites them over to meet the fabulous young woman he had meant to pair each friend with, but nothing more. Not surprisingly, when they come, they fall like dominoes.
Only one daughter has no ‘special friend’. She is the first born, a dabbler of all arts and sciences, but an expert of none. She has taken on the responsibility to protect her sisters and quell their frequent fights.

In his second marriage, a marriage of true love, Douglas Marsh has acquired six beautiful, identical daughters, who have made a pact never to marry. All are a challenge to the strict mores and interests that young ladies of Victorian England should have, but all are uniquely wonderful. He strives to match his new daughters to men who can appreciate each girl’s talents and interests. Only, one of his daughters wishes to choose for herself, and her choice sets off repercussions that could destroy them all.

After another very long pause and shuffling of legs, John spoke. “Douglas, are you saying you have compromised Angelica’s daughters?”
Douglas sighed in exasperation. “No. They were already compromised. I am simply attempting to find outlets for their passions.” He noticed the scowls on his friend’s faces. “These are not innocent children. They are experienced young women of twenty-one. The only issue that disturbs your conscience is these young ladies are my daughters.”
John choked on his drink. “That is precisely right.”
Douglas leaned forward. “But that is what makes this opportunity so perfect. Your wives will never expect when you come to visit your friend Douglas that a beautiful young woman awaits to love and enchant you. No one other than us shall know.”
Douglas noticed a frown on Francis’ face. “And before you tell me you don’t have time, in the case of you and Teddy, I intend to send the girls to you. Teddy, you can teach Alice better in your laboratory. And Francis, Charity will want patients to practice medicine upon.”
“Teach her what?” Teddy asked.
Douglas sighed. “I am hoping you actually do know more about the new advances in physics than she does and will be able to help her expand her knowledge.”
“More likely her waistline,” David muttered. “Have you even considered what happens if they become pregnant?”
“Not to worry, that is taken care of.” Douglas leaned back and waited for his offer to take root.
“Exactly how is that taken care of?” The color leeched from Francis’ face. “My god, the girl you had me attend last week was one of your daughters!”
Douglas nodded. “That was Charity. She was able to perform the surgery on the other girls, but she could not perform it on herself.”
Francis stood up. “Douglas. Have you lost your mind? That was a beautiful young woman. Countless men would have married her whether she was compromised or not.”
Douglas snorted. “Are there really so many young men allowed to marry a ruined girl with no dowry?”
Francis slammed his glass upon the fireplace mantle and glared at Doug. “You could have given her a dowry!”
“One, yes, but six, no.”
His face turned to anguish, then outrage. “But she was so beautiful…so perfect—”
“They all are. They are six of the most perfect, beautiful young women you’ll ever meet, and instead of bribing worthless young men to take them, I am offering them to four of the finest men I know, men who will actually love and appreciate them. But put that aside, there is another logistical reason why marriage is impossible: they cannot be separated.”
John frowned. “What do you mean they cannot be separated?”
“They can bear to be apart for a few hours, but nothing more. They are not simply sisters, they are as Francis observed: the same sister duplicated six times. There is a bond between them that makes it impossible for one to marry unless the man is willing to take the remaining five, as well. How many men do you know who will take six, un-dowered, compromised women into his house?”
